A Word about Diet

Before we take a look at additional nutrients that might be helpful, it needs to be said that diet in general plays a major role in preventing both first and additional heart attacks. Science has repeatedly pointed to the same kind of diet as the one so helpful in dealing with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. That is, a diet high in fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grains, and fiber, and low in fatty foods, especially meat and wholefat dairy products.

One diet that does an especially good job of delivering on all of these recommendations is known as the Mediterranean diet. In fact, scientists have looked specifically at the heart-protective potential of the Mediterranean diet and given it a thumbs-up.

In an article published in the medical journal Circulation in 1999, for example, a group of researchers presented their findings from the Lyon Heart Study. For 4 years, the researchers followed 600 people who had had a heart attack. The people, whose average age was 53, either switched to a Mediterranean diet or continued to follow a Western-style diet that got 33 percent of its calories from fat.

“Over the course of 4 years,” the researchers noted, “the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of a second heart attack and the overall death rate by as much as 70 percent.”

If that’s not enough motivation to switch to a Mediterranean diet, here’s another: The food tastes great. There are numerous books available on how to follow this kind of diet as well as many recipes online.
